There are a lot of people who want you to believe that as long as you put in hard work, you will achieve all the goals you have. The problem is that there are a lot of very hard working people in this world who struggle to make ends meet at the end of the month.
That fact used to really frustrate me.
Let Me Tell You My Story. . .
When I first started my business, I was full of gusto. I looked around at the others in the same business and many were making vast amounts of money. They were driving fancy cars. Going on wonderful trips - I wanted to be just like them.
Well, I was lucky to have a great vocation, I graduated from a top business college with extensive study in marketing, accounting and economics. I had been taught by some of the best teachers around everything I would need to know to make my business a huge success. What could possibly come up that I didn’t learn about in school?
Just so you don’t think I was being stupid and big-headed, I want you to know, Before I wrote my business plan, I did my homework. I listened to every pro I could find, I took out a good size loan, so I would have enough funding, I even did a traffic study of the city so I would know which intersections I should consider when looking for my office space.
I purchased great equipment, hired an architect to design the inside of the office so every one would be impressed. I worked hard on the construction myself and supervised every inch of the work. When the buildout was done, I went to auctions to buy top quality plants and fixtures. Basically, I poured my heart into this venture. You know the saying, “If you build it – they will come!”
How Could I Loose?
The first 2 or 3 months were great. People were coming in off a mailing I did. I hired staff to take care of them. I was feeling very good about the place. It seemed that people liked what we offered, but then just when we hit break-even, the growth stopped. That’s right it just leveled off.
If I made a little more money one month, it would dive the next. I was working 50-60 hours a week, leaving the house hours before the sun came up and getting home very late. And with all that hard work and dedication, did things get any better over time?
NO!
But why not? I was doing the work and putting in the time in. Isn’t that how it goes, you work hard and the profit will follow? That’s what I was led to believe all my life. But that’s not really how life works.
This went on for a couple years in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I never stopped trying. I was putting in a huge amount of hours, but most importantly, I was always looking for new ways to make the business a success.
Every so often, I would find “IT” you know that one thing that was going to turn the place around and send profit pouring in. Every time I found "IT" life was exciting... at last "THE" thing that would make all my efforts worthwhile.
My Knight In Shining Armor.
Yes for a little while, everything in life had hope was excitement. And two or three months later, after that idea bombed, I was looking again. Most of the time the new ideas would at least pay for themselves – most of the time – but never produced any real profit.
After a few years of this much time and energy, most people would have said “Enough is enough!” Let it go! Get on with it! Wrap this up and find something else to do! But I didn’t. I wasn't a quitter. I kept searching, working, and learning what doesn’t work.
Why did I do it? Why did I struggled and push and slave so hard day after day, year after year? Because by now, I had 3 wonderful children that made life so worth living. I knew that their future was in my hands and I needed to provide for them, and by golly, I was going to do just that.
That is how I pushed through day after day, year after year.
But, after a while, I was getting tired. You know that burned out feeling you get when you start to run out of stream? I wasn’t looking forward to work anymore, it was getting harder and harder to get out of bed. Other pressures were mounting too. The home life was starting to be affected, Life was not very good.
The event that changed my life. I know what you are thinking, I found the guru that saved me, I hit upon the ultimate marketing scheme, I found the goose that laid the golden egg.
No, No and I wish.
None of those are correct.
In fact they are farther from the truth than you can get.
What really happened is that my life. . . well, have you ever been so down in life, you know so low that there can't possibly be anything lower Rock Bottom as it were - and then all of the sudden, have the bottom completely fall out from underneath you?
Well that’s what happened to me! My life went down the tank. You see, my spouse decided to leave me, and when she did she took the kids with her, not just down the street, or across town, but 800 miles away.
What was I going to do? I couldn’t just close up shop and move. The loan was way too high, I had a lease, and if I defaulted on those, I wouldn’t be able to do anything besides janitorial ever again in my life.
But Here’s The Jewel.
It is the fact that my children were torn away from me!
Wait! didn't he just say how much he loved his kids,? How can that be so good?
This is how I was able to unlock the secrets to being successful in business!
“What?"
Here's the story. When you are in a position like I was, You have a choice, You can pay the child support, see the children a couple times a year and move on, or you can fight hard to keep them in your life.
I loved those kids so much I wasn’t about to let them go. No way!
So this became the focus and center of my life. Nothing, not even my business was more important than getting my kids back.
But Now There's A Big Problem
How do you get your kids back? You can't just go to Barnes and Nobel and buy a book on getting your kids back. In fact when I did go to look for ideas on how to accomplish my goal, the information that I found pretty much said, it wasn't going to happen. I should just make the best of it and start over.
Lucky for me, there was a voice inside me that said it was possible. So, because I didn't have any direct resource. I decided to study successful people in general. I figured there was a reason they were successful.
And the more I studied, the more I found similarities in their thoughts and actions. So I decided to keep studying and start applying everything I could to this process.
Then it happened only a couple of years later I was able to get my kids back. It's true! Once I had them back,
It’s not cheap raising 3 kids these days. But I still had a business that was just barely getting by. So what do you do? I really had to step up my business, but this time, I can't be working50-60 hours a week because have to care for the kids the way they needed to be cared for.
Then It Hit Me!
Like a ton of bricks. You know, the things that makes you go Duh! Why not take the same concepts that I used to get my kids back, and apply them to making my business a success? So I did!
Within 1 year I was able to double my collections. The next year, I doubled them again! I'm on my way to doing the same thing again this year! So what I am trying to tell you is that in 3 years I took a business and made it almost 8 times bigger than it was when I started applying these concepts.
But here is the real kicker. . .

That’s right my business exploded even though I am working half the time! It’s great I get to have the benefit of the income and the freedom of family time.
